Sustainability at IDS
With our products we shape the future. For us, this means thinking and acting holistically. It is not only economic aspects that determine our decisions, but also their impact on people and the environment.
Our sustainable, ethical business practices actively protect the environment.
In addition to economic success, we also strive for sustainability through the careful and economical use of resources. As an environmentally certified company, we see it as our responsibility to keep our ecological footprint as small as possible and to protect our environment. This includes sustainability in production and shipping, fairness towards our business partners as well as family awareness and a good work-life balance. Even our products help to conserve raw materials and optimise processes in almost all countries.
Since 2021, IDS has been offsetting all of its unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions by supporting international climate protection projects. Thereby, we combine global climate protection commitment with regional environmental benefits:
How do we reduce our carbon footprint?
In accordance with the 12 guiding principles of mechanical and plant engineering, we at IDS actively live sustainability in various areas of our company.
Carbon-compensated cameras
The carbon footprint of uEye CP and ACP cameras is fully offset, which is why they can call themselves "carbon-compensated". This is done, among other things, by supporting the First Climate project "Efficient cooking stoves in Uganda".

Not all emissions can be easily avoided. To produce a camera, many components and electronic building parts are needed that must be sourced globally. Unfortunately, these supply routes cannot be avoided. Therefore, IDS offsets these CO2 emissions in cooperation with First Climate AG. We are currently supporting the project "Efficient Cooking Stoves in Uganda", which promotes the distribution of energy-efficient cooking stoves. On the one hand, these cooking stoves lead to a reduction of exhaust gases that are harmful to the climate and health, to fuel savings, and on the other hand, they also create jobs and income for the local people. IDS thus assumes ecological and social responsibility.
In addition, our industrial cameras are also being used in more and more sustainable projects and applications.
Green logistics
In addition to developing and producing climate-friendly cameras, we believe we should also deliver them to our customers in a climate-friendly way. This is done with the help of plastic-free, recycled packaging materials and CO2-neutral transport worldwide.

Green logistics

Logistics is one of the areas with the highest emissions and is therefore a key point when it comes to sustainability. Packaging alone makes a significant contribution to environmental friendliness. Worldwide, about 32% of plastic packaging ends up uncontrolled in our environment, without any further use. Since plastic is neither good for the environment nor for health, IDS replaces it with biodegradable and sustainable alternatives. Thus, only recycled paper is used: both as filling material and as cardboard. The shipping bags, on the other hand, are made of compostable film, produced from corn starch. Furthermore, IDS tries to use as much shuttle packaging as possible. When suppliers ship larger quantities of products, this is done in our individual shuttle boxes.
In addition to packaging, shipping also plays a role, of course. This is done with the help of our logistics partners DHL and UPS with their environmental protection programs GoGreen and UPS Carbon Neutral, or through CO2-compensated transports of Dachser. The worldwide transport emissions resulting from our shipments are calculated and neutralized through climate protection projects.
Climate protection saves energy
Climate protection is closely linked to the issue of power generation. IDS relies on 100% green electricity, green gas and self-generated solar energy.

Climate protection through power and technology

As an energy source, we use only 100% green electricity and green gas at our main location in Obersulm. The electricity is partly generated by our own photovoltaic systems or comes from certified electricity providers.
The gas is produced 100% from organic residues, consistently sustainable and also certified. With every kilowatt hour we consume, we invest € 0.25 in the energy transition.

We also pay close attention to the environment when supplying our company buildings. In addition to photovoltaic systems, heat pumps for heating and cooling buildings are also part of our forward-looking energy concept. Furthermore, a so-called concrete core temperature control is used to cool the buildings in summer and to heat them in winter in an energy-saving and environmentally friendly way.
A cistern installed on the company premises is used to irrigate the outdoor facilities.
Our waste is cleanly separated and disposed of. Thanks to our plastic-free shipping, IDS produces significantly little residual waste. This waste is sent separately to a waste recycler, who separates it into recyclable and non-recyclable waste.
Eco-friendly mobility
Corporate mobility management makes a significant contribution to environmental protection. In addition to the use of e-company vehicles, company bike leasing or a subsidised ticket for public transport can also be used.

Resource and environmentally friendly mobility

Mobility is one aspect of environmental protection. In this regard, IDS has set itself the goal of converting its entire vehicle fleet to electric cars. Since 2017, there have already been several e-charging stations on the company premises, which are powered by self-generated electricity.
To promote the use of public transport, IDS subsidises the tickets of the regional public transport network.
Even more environmentally friendly than electric vehicles or public transport is, of course, the bicycle. For this reason, we offer our employees the option of leasing a company bike, which is extremely popular.
Climate-friendly thinking
Working at IDS is also designed to be climate-friendly. The paperless office is nothing new, but it makes working in the home office much easier. Local sourcing is also a top priority. Our company restaurant not only operates sustainably, but is also supplied by regional producers.

In addition to the (almost) paperless office, we also enable home offices, depending on the activity, and provide the necessary equipment. This saves employees from having to travel to work, gives them flexibility and also protects our climate.
The environmental aspect is also reflected in local sourcing. IDS attaches great importance to the fact that our company restaurant is supplied by regional producers, thus supporting local agriculture and at the same time minimise CO2 emissions due to shorter transport routes. In addition, there is a meat-free alternative on the menu every day.
The operator of our restaurant, apetito catering, was able to prove itself as an award winner for sustainable commitment for the fifth time in a row. For example, employees are trained in the responsible use of resources, environmentally friendly cleaning agents are used and even the organic waste is still processed into energy or fuel.
Busy little bees
In addition to diligent employees, busy bees also populate the IDS company premises. Founder and shareholder Jürgen Hartmann and his wife Ellen are passionate beekeepers and contribute to the protection of biodiversity with their beehives.

The general environmental awareness is evident, among other things, in the importance of the bee. To protect biodiversity, the IDS company premises are populated by bee colonies. These are kept by our founder and shareholder Jürgen Hartmann and his wife themselves. With the bees and an insect-friendly planting of the company premises, IDS contributes to the protection of species and the preservation of our ecosystem. In addition, the many industrious pollinators help the surrounding agriculture.
